Using a poker odds calculator to win – part 2

Written By Action Donkey On December 17th, 2008

OK we’ve had a few problems so far and we are a bit behind schedule.  That is to be expected though, and as it is our own schedule it’s not really a problem.

Getting used to the software that we bought, Holdem Genius, took a bit longer than expected.  And as neither of us had ever used a calculator before this, it took us a while to realize that the Holdem Genius software is rubbish.

But it did finally dawn on us that this software isn’t really very good at all.  The purpose of these articles isn’t to rate and review poker calculators, so there isn’t really a need to say the calculator was no good for us, but in the interest of fairness I guess I should really point out the problems that we had.

First negative is the level of support offered by the guys at Holdem Genius.  And that level is zero.  No support, as in, no answers to the simplest of emails.  Having pressed on regardless of this, our first choice of site for using this software was PDC Poker.  And the software wouldn’t work there.  We checked and recheck the software, our set-up on the PC, and the help section of the HG site itself.  No way would it work.

Moving on to Poker Stars, the software did work as it was supposed to.  But the level of advice it gave was incredibly limited.  Playing Limit Hold’em properly every bet should have a positive expectation. This software had us calling bets that were sometimes absolutely hopeless.  Even when we were obviously drawing dead the calculator was telling us to ‘check or call’.

Furthermore, any change on the screen could cause the software to cease functioning.  Never mind changing the table size (which is definitely not recommended) but other simple everyday things occurring on the pcs screen would cause the calculator to stop working.

All in all, having spent over a week on this one, we have decided to try the second one on the list, which is Holdem Inspector.

This time we have gone for the free license by downloading and opening a new account at LuckyAcePoker, which is a skin on the 888 poker network.  The download went smoothly, and we opened the poker account and made a $100 deposit by Neteller with no trouble.

Although, having opened a number of poker accounts over the years I was surprised not to receive a welcome email from this site.  You know the one you get, with your login details and all that?  Well, I still haven’t got it.  That will teach me to write down my login details when I open a new account.

But getting the license for the Holdem Inspector calculator went smoothly.  The free download version of the H.I. calculator only works on the free-play tables and you need the license to use it on the real money tables.  But I followed the procedure on the site and I had the license in about fifteen minutes from download.

That is as far as we have got right now.  We have the calculator, we have the poker account with $100 in it, plus $25 of an instant bonus to play with, and $75 more to come.

I should be back here in about a week with some results.  Fingers crossed.
