Poker Money Management – Holidays

Written By admin On December 22th, 2009

This is not going to be a long discussion on poker money management – despite the title.

As the holidays are almost here, it is a good time to remember why you play online poker. If you are playing just for the fun of it, then by all means use the extra free time that you should have to enjoy yourself with a few extra games.

If, however, you feel the need to always be a profitable poker player, then you must be careful when deciding to play during the festive season. The extra time off from work, mixed with maybe an extra drink, or two, can be a disastrous mix when it comes to managing your online bankroll.

One of the top ten rules for playing profitable poker is to NOT drink and play.

Another poker axiom is that not losing your money is mainly how you will win at poker.

The other side of that is that you win by taking money from players that are making the above mistakes.

Of course, these holidays will not be a happy time for everybody, and playing a bit of online poker can be a great way to get through the next few days if this time of year is not quite your thing.

If that is the case, then by all means do have a few games and enjoy yourself. But take a few simple precautions first.

If you have a large bankroll online, and you know that you will most likely be drinking and playing, then before you start playing withdraw some of that bankroll. Leave in your account whatever amount that you would feel ok about losing. A good measure would be to play with the amount that would equal the cost of a good night out, fifty dollars, or a hundred, whatever your tastes run to.

That way, if you play and lose all of that amount, so long as you enjoy yourself, it will be the same as if you went out and blew that money on a good time.

It will make your hangover a little easier to bear if you have not gone and lost your entire stack over the holidays.
