Using a poker odds calculator to win at poker – Part 1

Written By admin On December 2th, 2008

The title says it all, really, except it should be a question as opposed to a statement. Can you use a poker odds calculator to win money playing online poker?

Well, we are going to try to find out if this is possible. Having had a good look around the internets at the various poker calculators available, we are going to start with Holdem Genius. This calculator is our first choice as it advertises that it can be used on multiple tables at once, which most other calculators don’t seem to refer to.

So, we bought a copy of Holdem Genius for just a few cents under $100. There is an option to get it for free by signing up to a poker room through the Holdem Genius site, and it certainly makes sense to do it that way, as you only have to deposit $50 to the poker room in order to get the license for Holdem Genius.

When you do it that way, you have to play 500 hands at whichever poker room you signed up with before you can use the calculator at other online poker rooms. That is the reason we opted to buy our copy. We simply don’t want to be playing at some room we have no interest in playing at, just to say a few bucks. And of course, having been playing poker online for a good few years now, we have accounts at most of the major poker rooms already.

So we bought a copy. The licence lasts for one year, whichever way to choose to get your copy.

Now we have lined up a guy to test it out. He probably should remain nameless, so lets call him Sid. (After all, that is his name). Sid normally plays no limit holdem tournaments at Poker Stars and Poker.com (now called PDCPoker, I think).

But for our experiment, we have him playing micro stakes Texas Holdem Limit cash games. The reason for that is that we will want to release a deposit bonus by playing low stakes holdem, and limit is in our opinion the most suitable game for this. Because it’s limit, there is much less risk of going broke in one hand. And we have chosen micro stakes so that a small bankroll should be sufficient to clear a reasonably sized deposit bonus offer.

That is our thinking so far. We have high hopes for this method of making money from poker. So for the next week or so, Sid will be playing micro stakes limit holdem on stars while he gets used to the software and tweaks the playing style to suit his tastes – and to turn a profit.

One negative so far in this test, is the level of support offered by the guys at Holdem Genius. I emailed them five days ago to confirm that the calculator could be used on multiple tables simultaneously and I still have not gotten a response. Also, the tutorial could be more helpful.

Even so, the payment and download procedures were relatively straight-forward and painless. We had problems getting the software to work on the pdcpoker site, so our second choice was Stars.

That could be due to our complete lack of technological ability though, and we did get it to work at Stars with no problems at all, so we will have to try a few more sites before we can say if it is a problem with the software or with us.

After a week or so of testing and tweaking, we will post more details about how the test progressed, and if we decide to continue with the experiment, then we will lay out the basics of where we will be palying and so on. Stay tuned.

www.paynorake.comPayNoRake is the latest poker room to hit the internet. And this one is very different to other online poker rooms in one important aspect – like the name suggests, you can get all of your rake paid back to you!

With PayNoRake.com you don’t need to do anything special in order to get your rake paid back – simply play poker on the tables and your rake will be credited back into your player account within 24 hours. There is a payment scale which determines how much of your rake will be given back to you. It starts at 50% and goes right up to 100% rakeback!

The poker room operates on the Action Poker network, which has some well known rooms already in it, such as Poker In Canada and Action Poker. Traffic (player numbers) is not as high as at some other poker rooms, although that might change depending on how well this new room manages to attract players.

Aside from the rake back deal, Pay No Rake also offers a 100% deposit bonus of up to $1,000 for new players.

This new room could be a big boost to poker players that have found it difficult to make online poker profitable. Between the deposit bonus and the rakeback deal, simply playing breakeven poker will result in a profit.

Poker Tips & Strategies

Online poker players often ask what are some strategies to play better poker. We hope to provide here some good strategies for becoming a better poker player, or at least playing a better game.

Meanwhile, here are our top 3 tips for playing better poker.

Be Patient
Being patient can be the single most important characteristic of a successful poker player. Being patient means waiting for good cards, and not playing any old hand just to be playing. Be patient, it pays.

Play less
It may seem contradictory, but playing less hands can make a big difference to your bankroll. Cut out those marginal hands in bad position, and wait for better hands, or at least better position.

Have fun
If you are not having fun when you are playing, regardless of whether you are winning or losing, then poker may not be for you.

Above all else, you should enjoy playing poker. No matter how good you eventually get, you will still have losing games. The money involved should not be more important to you than the game itself.
